Introduction
Mitral valve disease is the most common valvular pathology affecting the adult population. The incidence increases with increasing age. In patients with severe mitral regurgitation, surgical repair or replacement of the mitral valve is frequently performed. Transesophageal echocardiography is an essential tool for assessing baseline valvular function and guiding surgical decision making during the perioperative period. A systematic approach is required to understand the pathology and provide the surgeon with appropriate information to optimize the surgical intervention. The purpose of this PBLD will be to discuss an approach to mitral valve assessment and procedural guidance.
Learning Objectives
1. Participants will have an approach to TEE evaluation to guide surgical mitral valve interventions
2. Participants will be aware of measurements used in surgical decision making
3. Participants will have an approach to detecting complications following mitral interventions
